88th EUROPEAN STUDY GROUP
with INDUSTRY

Department of Mathematics

13 - 17 August 2012

ESGI (European Study Group with Industry) is Europe's leading workshop bringing together academic mathematicians and industrial companies. These week-long workshops have been held annually since 1968 and were previously known as the Oxford Study Groups with Industry, where they attracted leading mathematicians to work on industrial problems.

Companies bring to the Study Group mathematical questions they would like to have solved, often in the form of a modelling problem or an optimization issue. The mathematicians work in groups around each problem, presenting at the end of the week to the companies the result of their efforts, and afterwards a written report.

Problem areas studied have included mechanics, heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, financial derivative pricing and processes, granular materials, electric fields, geometry, and topics in operational analysis, but there are in principle no limitations in the types of mathematics brought to bear in these workshops.

Among the Danish companies who have participated in previous Study Groups are LEGO, Novo Nordisk, Danfoss, Grundfos, DSB, DONG, Danske Bank, and many others.
